A Backup Here and a Backup There - Off-site Backups for Your Cloud

Lilac Schoenbeck

We spend a lot of time taking input from our customers. In fact, they drive a truly significant part of our roadmap. I love that, actually - it means we're building what the market wants - not just what the giant brains at iland think is cool. (Giant brains are great - they gave us Big Data and an awesome console).

Your Estimated Wait Time is 48 hours

Lilac Schoenbeck

On my to-do list on any given day is placing 2-4 phone calls to nameless entities trying to unravel a medical bill, work out some accounts-payable nonsense, or return the yarn that was called “teal” while being far more chartreuse. It’s tedious and annoying – and I have grown weary waiting on speakerphone for the unending cycle of Kenny G music to pass, praying a sentient and semi-competant individual is on the other end of the line.

Your Disk is Too Big

Jeff Polczynski

Recently, I was helping a friend work-around limited on-premise data center resources by recommending they deploy their new application into the cloud. Of course my hope was that I could help this friend host his servers in iland's Enterprise Cloud Services, but he explained that his only option was Azure because of corporate policy. I naively responded, "I'm sure they'll work fine, you're not trying to do anything unusual." I warned him that his big challenge would be migrating the VMs from Azure back on-premise later because he'd have to convert the VMs to work inside VMware.

Clouds, Cabs and UberMobiles

Lilac Schoenbeck

I’ve always been amazed at how committed people are to an analogy. Everyone wants to find the perfect analogy for what they do – so much so that we had some healthy debate in our company over this definition of the various shades of cloud, found online by Tim Fritch, our head of customer support. Our President, Brian Ussher, was understandably bothered that customers of IaaS, in this model, needed their own oven. That hardly seems low-investment.

Turing Tests and Customer Service

Lilac Schoenbeck

Most of us in the land of tech were pretty nonplussed by the recent assertion that the Turing Test had “finally” been passed – by a bot pretending to be a child, and a non-native speaker, at that. It wasn’t a solid pass – and that was hardly a high bar.
