Sometimes, you just need a cloud rant

Lilac Schoenbeck

I had the pleasure of reconnecting with EMA analyst Torsten Volk before the holiday, and talking about Disaster Recovery as a Service, iland, and our wonderful customers. He has years of experience in this space, which made for a fun conversation.

Don't Spend More on Disaster Recovery Than You Have To

Lilac Schoenbeck

We get it. It's December. Visions of sugarplums are dancing in your head - or - if you're like me, you're debating whether you can be bothered to make homemade doughnuts. You've got other concerns beyond IT resiliency. This a month for just getting through.

Everyone wakes up in January 3rd and decides it's time to get their disaster recovery plan in order. It's been a priority for years - and I bet your management team will fight you tooth and nail over the costs yet again. This is a dance you know well.

The Budget Battle: Don't Kill DRaaS

Lilac Schoenbeck

We are rapidly approaching the end of 2016. With it will come a million blogs prognosticating 2017 trends, setting priorities and suggesting resolutions. We are also rapidly approaching, for many, the 2017 budget cycle, the most coveted gala event of the IT year.

This wont be a blog about new promises, new plans or new resolutions. This will be a blog about an old one: DRaaS.

Gartner Publishes Critical Capabilities for DRaaS, 2016

Lilac Schoenbeck

Last week, Gartner released it's updated Critical Capabilities for Disaster Recovery as a Service, 2016. In the report, they reviewed 20 DRaaS providers - of the literal hundreds in the market. iland is proud to have been among those 20 and to garner such scores.

They evaluated each provider on 4 use cases, evaluating everything from customer support to technology to pricing. In their process, they ascribe a value to each factor - which may or may not match your own company's priorities (For example, if you're not looking to protect a mainframe, that criterion may be irrelevant to you.)

When the Cloud and DRaaS work pays off

Lilac Schoenbeck

At iland, nothing, and I mean nothing, feels as good as hearing a customer tell us we’ve solved their problem.

They were facing an IT outage but were able to fail over to our cloud without a glitch. They needed to scale, and we delivered the extra resources on budget and in no time at all. Their network had security vulnerabilities, but our advanced security features detected and mitigated any threat.

Mark Your Calendars: IDC Declares Cloud "Mainstream"

Lilac Schoenbeck

In a recent Cisco-sponsored survey, IDC has reportedly declared the cloud mainstream. No longer is this bleeding edge or cutting edge - it's actually just normal. "68 per cent of respondents using public, private or hybrid cloud in their IT mix," quotes the Register.

Not Just a Unitasker: Zerto Virtual Replication

Lilac Schoenbeck

On Alton Brown’s cooking show, he used to abhor a unitasker – a tool used for only one thing. They clutter the cabinets and are useful only in the rare instance that you need to slice an egg or store half an onion.

Similarly, a unitasking product in tech is annoying. They clutter your IT brainspace with yet another procurement item, another bill, another upgrade and another set of passwords. The value of a single-purpose tool is just lower than a multi-use tool.
