Although Service Providers have been providing offsite Disaster Recovery (DR) solutions for a while now, “Disaster Recovery in the Cloud” or “DRaaS” is still a relatively new term for some of us. What does it actually mean? In most scenarios, it’s a hosting or cloud provider using various replication technologies to offer disaster recovery services on a hosted platform. It may be as simple as a pure Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) play where all you are getting is just the infrastructure on which you can restore your workloads. Or it could be a robust end-to-end managed solution where the provider not only manages the replication and failover process, but also manages the DR run book and provides application layer management services as well. In both cases, there are a few key considerations when looking for a DR solution and a cloud provider.
