After Hurricane Harvey, one of the worst storms in US history, people from all over came together in a tremendous show of compassion. Volunteers, not just from Houston or even Texas, but from across the United States came to help the amazing city iland calls home. At a time when the news felt heavy with stories of loss and destruction, it was heartwarming to hear about communities working together in Houston regardless of race, background, religion or political views.
The media talked a lot about “the spirit of Texas” or “the spirit of Houston” – When devastation occurs, we rush to help each other in any way we can. The willingness to help our neighbors, to collaborate in order to find solutions, and to lend a helping hand are values of Houstonians, and are also values that we aspire to at iland.
Many of us at iland have been volunteering our time to help out in the community. ilanders have been contributing to relief efforts in a variety of ways: donating and delivering supplies to evacuation shelters and animal shelters, cleaning up debris from neighborhoods, hosting food-drives, feeding first responders, and even assisting directly with the rescue efforts of those in danger. In addition to the many individual efforts of our employees, iland as a company has also rolled up its sleeves to help. In an effort to give back to the Houston community, the iland leadership team gave every ilander eight hours a week to volunteer at a local organization of their choice. We’ve also initiated a company-organized volunteer opportunity at the Houston Food Bank, in addition to our pledge to match monetary contributions up to $10,000. As Houston continues to rebuild, iland continues to look for ways to get involved.
The massive devastation caused by Hurricane Harvey means recovery will be an on-going effort, but as long as we continue to work together, we will make it through. We are resilient, and we are Houston strong!
